The H-19 helicopter, also known as the "Chickasaw," was one of the first tactical transport helicopters developed by Sikorsky in the ‘40s. Designed for troop and material transport, the H-19 featured a distinctive front-mounted engine configuration. This design was innovative for its time, optimizing flight stability and manoeuvrability while offering robust operational versatility. It entered service in the early 1950s and was employed by the U.S. Armed Forces during the Korean War. Its strong performance and high reliability were key factors in the helicopter’s widespread adoption across numerous countries. The versatile airframe of the H-19 also served as a foundation for various versions and mission-specific variants, including models for maritime patrol and medical evacuation
Le Sikorsky UH-19 (autre désignation : S-55) était un hélicoptère de transport américain monomoteur, avec une structure métallique en demi-coque dans une configuration classique avec un rotor principal et un rotor de queue sur la poutre. L'entraînement était assuré par un seul moteur radial Wright R-1300-3 de 800 CV. Le vol du premier prototype eut lieu en 1949, et la production en série commença en 1950. La production sous licence a eu lieu en Grande-Bretagne, où l'UH-19 a été fabriqué par Westland sous le nom de Whirlwind. On estime qu'environ 1700 exemplaires de l'hélicoptère ont été construits.
UH-19 a été initialement développé comme une entreprise privée par Sikorsky, mais a rapidement attiré l'attention de l'armée américaine. L'augmentation rapide de la production en série et l'accélération des travaux d'amélioration de la machine ont eu lieu pendant la guerre de Corée (1950-1953). De nombreuses versions de développement ont été créées au cours de la production en série. L'un d'eux est le SH-19B, qui a été adapté aux opérations de sauvetage au-dessus des réservoirs d'eau. Une version spéciale pour les garde-côtes américains, désignée HO4S-2G, a également été créée. Le Sikorsky UH-19 s'est avéré être une machine très performante et durable, qui a suscité un grand intérêt auprès des clients étrangers. La machine a été exportée entre autres vers l'Argentine, le Brésil, la Belgique, Israël et l'Italie.
